Many advantages of hard machining

Tuesday 13 October 2020, 12:45 PM

Machining steels with up to 65 HRC is a real challenge for tool and mold making. To make this easier, SARTORIUS has launched the new ATORN RockTec PRO series, innovative hard milling cutters that enable fast, efficient milling with just one clamping.

When machining ferrous materials over 50 HRC (Rockwell hardness) one usually speaks of “hard machining”. Such extremely hard steels are used in particular in tool and mold construction. For a long time, grinding or eroding was common practice for processing these materials, but the work steps required meant that it was very complex and therefore cost a lot of time and resources. Although the process has been greatly simplified by hard milling, it also has special requirements.

Japanese solid carbide and multilayer coating

This is why SARTORIUS relies on Japanese ultra-fine grain solid carbide for the cutting material of the new ATORN RockTec PRO hard milling cutter series. These carbide types are particularly pressure-resistant and extremely hard, so that they are extremely wear-resistant. The high temperature resistance also enables higher cutting speeds. The exclusively developed TiAlSiN multilayer coating of the ATORN RockTec PRO milling cutter acts like an insulation during machining and protects the carbide against heat and wear. The hard layer also increases the surface hardness of the tool and at the same time reduces the coefficient of friction. And last but not least, the extremely hard multilayer coating also protects the substrate from cracks.

466 individual tools for a wide range of applications

The new ATORN solid carbide milling cutter program includes shank, torus and radius milling cutters with and without relief in 13 designs. This total of 466 individual tools cover a diameter range from 0.1 to 20 mm for a wide variety of machining tasks. Digital twins will also be available in the common formats for all tools.
