UCIMU: 2018 Anno record per l’industria italiana della macchina utensile. attesa stabilità per il 2019.
Cinisello Balsamo 12 December 2018. 2018 was the year of records for the Italian machine tool, robot and automation manufacturing company which recorded double-digit increases for all economic indicators. 2019 will instead be characterized by substantial stability. This is a summary of what was illustrated by Massimo Carboniero, president of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, the association of Italian machine tool, robot and automation manufacturers, during the usual year-end press conference.
As emerges from the preliminary data prepared by the UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE Business Studies and Culture Center, in 2018, production grew to 6,900 million euros, marking an increase of 13.4% compared to the previous year. This is the fifth consecutive year of growth and, in absolute terms, of the new record for the Italian industry in the sector.
The result was determined both by the excellent performance of deliveries by Italian manufacturers on the domestic market, which grew by 21.1%, to 3,270 million euro, and by the positive trend in exports, up 7.2%, to 3,630 million EUR.
According to the UCIMU report on ISTAT data, in the first eight months of the year (last available survey), the main destination countries of the made in Italy sector were: Germany 246 million euros (+ 11.6%); China 237 million euros (+ 7.1%); United States 223 million euros (+ 9.5%); Poland 143 million euros (+ 49.8%) and France 135 million euros (-4.6%).
By virtue of these increases, Italy has strengthened its role on the international scene, where it has distinguished itself not only by the competence expressed by the industries in the sector, measured by production and export data, but also by the liveliness of the demand sustained and stimulated by the competitiveness measures such as super and extra-depreciation included in the Industry / Enterprise 4.0 programs.
In particular, in 2018, the consumption of machine tools, robots and automation in Italy rose by 25.9% to 5,620 million euros.
The willingness to invest in new technology, including digital, by Italian users has led manufacturers to focus their attention on the domestic market, as shown by the reduction in the export to production ratio, which rose from 55.6% in 2017 to 52, 6% of 2018.
In an unfavorable general climate, in 2019, the Italian industry in the sector should in any case confirm the performance of 2018, benefiting from the positive trend of deliveries on foreign markets, expected to increase. The domestic market is clearly slowing, whose growth trend seems to have lost the momentum we had become accustomed to over the last few years.
Production will rise to 7,040 million (+ 2%) driven by exports which, expected to grow by 5%, will amount to 3,810 million euros. Consumption, that is to say the demand from Italian users, will stop at 5,630 million euros (+ 0.2%). The stationary nature of the domestic market will have repercussions both on the deliveries of Italian manufacturers that will fall to 3,230 million euros (-1.2%) and on imports which will amount to 2,400 million (+ 2.1%). The export data on production will grow by one percentage point to 54.1%.
Massimo Carboniero, president of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, commented: “We are satisfied with this 2018: the year closes with excellent results collected both in Italy and abroad and with a turnover that, considered as a whole, that is summing up to the production of machines, even the production of parts, tools, numerical controls not counted in Italian machine tools, has exceeded 9 billion euros “.
“For 2019, although we are confident that we can maintain the levels reached in 2018, we note a clear slowdown in investments in new machines by Italian users. While understanding that the growth we were accustomed to cannot continue uninterruptedly with those rhythms and that intensity, it should be remembered that a recent survey carried out by the UCIMU and EUMETRA FOUNDATION shows that only half of the Italian engineering companies made investments in the period between 2017 and the first part of 2018 “.
“For this reason – continued Massimo Carboniero – it would be necessary to proceed on the already traced path of innovation, confirming, also for 2019, the measures that have worked so far”.
“In this moment of great discussion about the provisions that will be included in the 2019 Budget Law, we welcome the confirmation of the phased depreciation, rewarding for SMEs: higher for small investments and decreasing as the value of new ones increases shopping. Just as positive is the refinancing of the New Sabatini Law “.
“Beyond the important technical details concerning the Budget Law – concluded Massimo Carboniero – what we hope is that the government will continue to dialogue with companies and representative organizations. We hope that yesterday’s meeting can be the first of a series of open discussions, in full respect of roles and parts. We machine tool entrepreneurs are willing to make our contribution, certain of being able to represent an important piece of the country: not only that of a leading sector in the international scenario but also and above all that of an industry that guarantees stable employment for workers, also offering interesting opportunities for professional growth for those entering the world of work for the first time ”.
