MAPAL relies on green electricity

Updated on Thursday 22 October 2020, 1:17 PM

As a contribution to climate protection, MAPAL is increasing the use of renewable energies. Starting next year, the precision tool manufacturer will only use natural electricity from 100 percent renewable sources. “We are changing the electricity provider and in the future we will use green electricity from hydropower. To this end, we have concluded a corresponding framework agreement for all nine production locations in Germany with a well-known energy supplier, ”says Gorazd Bohinec, Global Lead Buyer Purchasing.
So far, MAPAL has used so-called “gray electricity”, an electricity mix in which the share of renewable energies is around 40 percent. The decision for pure green electricity was made despite the associated additional costs, “out of responsibility for the environment and for more sustainability”, as the managing partner Dr. Jochen Kress emphasizes. The annual electricity requirement of MAPAL in Germany is in the middle, double-digit gigawatt range. With the use of green electricity, the group of companies improves its ecological footprint and saves around 13,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) every year.
MAPAL operates an energy and an environmental management system that is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 and DIN ISO 14001. The company continuously reviews and optimizes energy requirements and invests in energy-efficient machines and systems as well as environmentally friendly lighting and building technology. The main plant in Aalen also has its own combined heat and power plant, which covers part of the energy required for tool production by means of combined heat and power.
